Head Field Hockey Coach

Merion Mercy Academy, an independent Catholic college preparatory school for girls grades 9-12 outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, seeks a Head Field Hockey Coach who is committed to leading a competitive field hockey program and working in a dynamic, student-centered athletic department.  

The Head Field Hockey Coach is a dedicated, enthusiastic individual who understands the value of education-based athletics and serves as a positive role model.  The ideal candidate will instruct players in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.  A successful candidate thrives in an all-girls environment and meets the unique needs of young women.  Student-athletes shall also receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of the Mercy values, leadership, self-discipline, self-confidence, and sense of pride.  

Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, the duties of the Head Field Hockey coach include but are not limited to: 

  • Plan and direct the field hockey program at Merion Mercy Academy.

  • Manage and supervise the athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote growth in skill development, teamwork, and responsibility.  

  • Build positive relationships with the Merion players, families, and community. 

  • Cultivate a desire to win, positive attitude, personal pride, and pride for Merion Mercy Academy and the community as a whole.  

  • Commitment to the health and well-being of student-athletes on and off the field.

  • Model sport-like behavior and appropriate conduct towards players, officials, spectators.

  • Communicate regularly with the student-athletes, parents, and families, in regards to team updates, cancellations, changes, etc.

  • Communicate and meet with the Director of Athletics on the status of the field hockey program.

  • Assist in attracting quality student-athletes to Merion Mercy Academy through coordination with the Admissions Office.

  • Follow athletic department policies and procedures, along with athletic training policies concerning injuries and the reporting of injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Adheres to the highest standards of ethics, sportsmanship, and expectations of the governing bodies (AACA, PIAA). 

  • Foster the goals and standards of the Athletic Department in coordination with Merion Mercy Academy’s mission and vision.

  • Perform other such duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Director of Athletics and/or the Head of School.  

Position Requirements include: 

  • Previous successful coaching and/or experience in the sport of field hockey at the high school level (college preferred)

  • Possess superior character and integrity, demonstrate strong interpersonal and leadership and communication skills, and be committed to the development of female student-athletes

  • Ability to travel to and from practices from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on game days potentially from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Associate degree; bachelor’s degree preferred 

 

The selected candidate must pass all PA Department of Education background checks, Protecting God's Children training, and possess/obtain CPR/First Aid certification, plus concussion and cardiac training prior to beginning coaching.
